September 13, 2024 Update
Students have been settling into the new routines of their classrooms. We are looking forward to hosting students and their parents to our Open House next week. Thursday, September 19th from 4:00-5:30 will be our Meet the Teacher open house. Teachers will be sharing information about their classroom set up, curriculum and communication plans, and structures for the year ahead. Mrs. Kawchuk will be in the music room. We ask that parents stay with their children during this time to explore the classrooms. Families are invited to come at any time during this open house style event. Please note that doors will close at 5:30 to the classrooms. School Council is hosting a welcome back event starting at 5:15 at the garden doors compound. Please see the information below in regards to this event.
Parent Viewpoint: Coming home today is a parent viewpoint form. These can be completed and returned to teachers by the end of next week. This information helps teachers best plan for your child. Please connect with your child’s teacher if you have any questions or need to follow up with a conversation.
Outside Play: We love learning outside and our fresh air breaks. We go outside at lunch recess and afternoon recess. Classes also have outside physical education times throughout the week. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather because rain or shine, we enjoy the Calgary outdoors! It is very helpful for jackets, boots, outdoor wear to be labelled with your child’s name.
Terry Fox: Friday, September 20th will be Terry Fox Run day at our school. We will be starting with a kick off assembly and then as an entire school we will be heading outside to run our ”track”. Each time students complete a lap, they will get a marker line on their finger or hand to help keep track. Students set personal goals for how many laps they would like to run. They have been training with their classes already!
Family School Travel Survey: Lake Bonavista School is taking part in the Active and Safe Routes to School project that will improve the school journey for our students. Through School Travel Planning, our school community will work with community partners to reduce congestion, address traffic safety issues and encourage more students to walk and wheel for school and local trips.
Please complete this 5-minute Family Survey with your eldest child who attends this school. Your input is important to the success of this project. Knowing what travel choices families are making and why they are making them will help the school create an action plan that considers everyone’s needs.
This survey is voluntary; you may choose not to participate and you have the option to withdraw from this survey at any point. We do not ask for your name. Your responses are anonymous and will be stored electronically in secure password-protected files, only accessible to the school's Active and Safe Routes to School team, Ever Active Schools, and the City of Calgary, who are directly involved in the project. Family Travel Survey
Traffic Safety: Did you know that the front of the school is marked with No Stopping sections? We ask families to choose safety over convenience. Parking or stopping in these zones, particularly by the crosswalk, creates reduced visibility for pedestrian safety. In addition, as this street is so busy at drop off and pick up, stopping and parking in this zone creates a single lane for cars to travel in both directions, considerably slowing down traffic. Thank you for adhering to the signage.
An Evening with Paul Davis: Social Media and Online Safety Expert, Paul Davis, is presenting and all parents/guardians are invited to attend. Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at 6:00pm in the Deer Run School Gym. Thank you to Deer Run School for hosting and inviting us. Paul will discuss and inform parents on topics such as: smartphones and social platforms, privacy and online security and cyberbullying.
