February 7th Update

Thank you Ms. Bouchard and Mrs. Cooper for bringing the FiNS program to our school again this year. Grade 3-4 scientists and many other classes are watching the progress in the tank in the learning commons. Much more learning to come!

Fostering Independence and Practical Life Skills

Caring for our belongings is a skill that all children learn throughout their time in school. Our students are respectful in the way they prepare their spaces for lunch, carefully putting their placemats out before opening their lunch bags. Lunch bags are typically very well cared for as students identify their unique bag and they are mostly labelled.

Winter becomes a more challenging time for caring for belongings. Our lost and found seems to be overwhelming full.

We continue to teach, model and practice order. “When we look into the actions of all living things we see that each does not work for his own benefit only. There is an order in nature. This order comes because each one does its own work in its own place; if it did not, there could be no order.” Maria Montessori

How can parents help?

  • Label outdoor clothing: boots, shoes, mittens, jackets
  • Label lunch bags, water bottles, special items like hoodies and jerseys.
  • Show your child where their items are labelled so they can practice and learn how to identify their own belongings (there are a lot of black snow pants at school!)
  • Encourage children to practice order and organization at home. Where do we put our mittens so they stay together and don’t get lost? How do we tuck our boots together on the mat?
  • Practice the “before I leave” strategy.  Adults frequently do the “phone, wallet, keys” check before leaving the house. Practice the “toque, mittens, jacket” reminders before leaving the house.
