February 2nd Update
Lake Bonavista School is deeming February as LITERACY MONTH!! On January 31, 2024, Rooms 2 and 3 led us through an assembly that focused on the importance of developing reading and writing skills. In addition to the assembly, Room 2 and 3 have also planned a variety of literacy activities that can be done at school and at home, including a literacy Bingo, a Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) week, creative writing opportunities, and literacy games to support learning, as well as important information about our upcoming Family Literacy Day. These events and literacy based projects will be taking place from February 1-29. Watch for information from your child’s teacher.
Report Cards
By the end of January, your child’s report card will be available to view in your MyCBE account. The report card is one of the ways teachers communicate how your child is progressing in their learning. Teachers may also share learning progress through parent/teacher conferences, your child’s daily work and assignments, and other ongoing communication with you.
What to Expect in Your Child’s Report Card
Lake Bonavista School, CBE, began implementing the new Alberta Education Curriculum:
Fall 2022 start:
· Mathematics (K-6)
· English Language Arts and Literature (K-6)
· Physical Education and Wellness (K-6)
Fall 2023 start:
· Science (K-3)
In the new curriculum, some things students learn may be new or may have previously been taught in higher grades. Students could be missing foundational pieces from previous grades, and their report card indicators might not be as high as before. This is expected when there is a new curriculum. It might take more than one school year to build these foundational skills. Even though each grade has its own curriculum, many ideas come up again each year, helping students to build on what they already know and do well.
Teachers continue to make learning interesting and inspiring and are adapting to students' needs during this transition. As always, if you have questions about your child's learning, please reach out to their teacher.
Kindergarten Report Cards
Kindergarten teachers will report progress to parents / legal guardians via January and June report cards.
· In January, progress in English Language Arts and Literature and Math will be communicated to parents / legal guardians via the report card. Other subject areas will be visible online but will be blank (these subjects will not appear on PDF versions).
· In June, progress in all discipline areas will be communicated to parents / legal guardians via the report card.
Montessori Tenet
For the month of February, the Montessori tenet we will focus on is relationships. There are many relationships we tend to when we think about care for self, care for others, care for our environment. Maria Montessori said, “we shall walk together on this path of life, for all things are part of the universe and are connected with each other to form one whole unity.” This month, staff and students will be discussing the ways we can strengthen and honour the many connections and relationships we have.
Valentines Day
Please watch for an update from your child’s teacher on Valentine’s day. Teachers will be designing learning opportunities that connect to gratitude, courtesy and acts of service. Please note that treats cannot be shared at school.
Traffic Safety
We know this week was tricky with the melting and freezing. We remind everyone that the front of the school is a no stopping zone. Please be courteous and mindful of our crosswalk. We have had many days where the crosswalk is not clear for students to safely use. Please be kind to our neighbours and avoid parking in the alleys as this limits their ability to leave their homes safely during our congested start and stop of the day.
