December 6th Update

It is hard to believe that we have only 10 more days of school before our winter break. There are many things happening at the school before then.

This week Mrs. Watson and Ms. Rooke met with each classroom to talk about belonging at LBS. Students described what belonging looks like, sounds like and feels like. They shared how they contribute to belonging at our school. Watch some of the highlights to be displayed in the hallway when you come for the winter event.

Winter Event

Our annual Winter Event will be December 12th from 6:30-8:00pm. Kindergarten students will get early entrance through the Garden Doors. Throughout the evening there will be activities in classrooms and performances in the gym. To accommodate our small gym size, performances will be rotating by grade. We ask that you stay as a family for this event as each activity will require adult support/supervision. We are excited for a “fill a sock” initiative for The Mustard Seed. Information for each classroom has been sent by classroom teachers and Mrs. Kawchuk.

Spirit Days

The last week of school will be a fun spirit week:

December 16: Ready set Glow! Show off your holiday bling – hats, headbands, accessories

December 17: Gettin’ Grinchy! Dress up in green or grinchy attire.

December 18: Winter Wonderland! Wear white, snowflakes, winter items.

December 19: Ugly sweater day. Have fun wearing a favorite holiday shirt or sweater.

December 20: Plushy Pjs – get cozy in your favorite holiday or cozy pjs.

Lost and Found

We hope to have a completely empty Lost and Found before we leave for break. The BEST way for us to help items get back to their owner is when they are labelled with a name. Thank you for labelling hats, boots, shoes and jackets. It makes a big difference.

Safety Drills

The safety of all students and staff of LBS is of great importance. To that end, we have been working to establish appropriate safety measures for the various situations that may occur and affect our staff and students. Fire drills are a long-standing expectation of everyone who congregates in a setting such as a school. We are required to have a minimum of six fire drills each school year. Our students and staff treat each drill as though it was the real thing and we are very proud of their performance during those drills. Teachers keep class lists with them during all drills and attendance is always taken. Parents or other visitors are expected to evacuate the building when the fire alarm is sounded.

It is a reflection of the changes in our society that we must add variations to our safety drills. On Friday, we practiced a drill known as a “lockdown” with CPS. The teachers instructed students regarding their role during a drill of this kind. No one is allowed to enter or leave the building during a lockdown procedure. As we continue to refine our school safety procedures, other safety precautions we have in place include:

Locking All Doors

Walkie-Talkies – have been purchased for communication when children are out in the school field

Visitors – are expected to register at the office

Volunteers – must complete a security clearance and wear nametags at all times

Substitute Teachers – are provided with emergency information upon entering the school.

Teachers are trained in first aid and have thoroughly reviewed emergency plans with the children. We appreciate your support in these very important matters.
